Never Compare yourself with anyone!

Never Compare yourself with anyone. Research shows that in Olympics “Bronze medal winners are happier than Silver medal winners”

But why?

Silver medal winners compare themselves with Gold medal winners. Their mindset would be like, “ If I would have clocked a few seconds faster, then I would have win a gold medal”.

Bronze medal winners compare themselves with the other participants who have missed out the medals. Their mindset would be like, “ Thank god! I just clocked on time and won bronze!”

So what is the ultimate life implication from this research?

Upward comparison is stressful & Downward comparison is stress-free. It’s all about who you’re comparing yourself to.

Let me now correlate this with my real life scenarios.

My Train Journey:

I am staying in a place which is nearly 40kms away from the city. I travel daily for about 2 hours to reach my workplace. If I leave home at 7:45 hours then I would reach back around 22:30 hours only. So this is my routine for nearly 8 months. Till date, I neither blame myself for buying home so far from the city nor my office to be not located near to my home.

There are people who stay just 2 km away from the office and they just come to office by walk. Do I need to feel jealous of them?

Never.

Because I just don’t compare myself from the person who just staying near to my company. Instead….

I know a person who is staying in Thirumalpur which is 80Kms from the city. He was traveling daily for 3.5 hours daily to reach his workplace. He starts to work somewhere in the early morning and reach home at midnight. And he was doing it for nearly 30+ years and in the next 3 years, he is going to retire and enjoy his retirement life.

So, this is the person whom I just compare myself to. When comparing with his travel, mine was far better. Here downward comparison helped me!

Upward comparison is stressful & Downward comparison is stress-free. It’s all about who you’re comparing yourself to.

Some question to rethink off:

How times in our life we have come up with upward comparison and feel stressed?

  • When your friend has a girlfriend you don’t have, you feel stressed? But why do you compare yourself with that person?
  • When your competitor had ticked the biggest client in your city, which you didn’t, you feel stressed? But why do you compare yourself with that client?
  • When your kid is going to school in bicycle and your neighbor is dropping his kid in an automobile, you feel stressed? But why do you compare yourself with your neighbor?
  • When I look into some top class designer and start comparing myself why not I am like him, I feel stressed? But why should I compare myself with him?

These series of question keeps on going. When you start upward comparison, then there is no end to it. You are the one who is feeling stressed my doing it.

It’s just like you are putting yourself in the game where you know you are going to lose and finally you lose it.

Conclusion:

If you don’t have anyone to downward compare too, then the best is to compare with yourself. Think of how you are before 5 years and how much you have earned in these days. But still, if your past is beautiful and in present you’re struggling, then don’t compare yourself with your past. Just leave as it and things will improve.

Above all, the best solution is Never Compare yourself with anyone

PS: You may ask me I wish to Austin kleon, I compare myself with Austin Kleon and for sure I will become like him. So here this is upward comparison. And I am not feeling stressed about it. So why not do an upward comparison here?

Yeah! A great question and answer will be in my upcoming blogs.

Just like Marvel movies where you need to wait till all credits go off to see the post-credit scene, Here too beingkarthik you need wait….Stay tuned….
